This place is open for those after hours bar people looking to sober up before making the trek back home. It's interesting to people watch late at night/early in the morning. You go here for the hippie hash. I know people have to go here for other things too... I just don't see why they would get anything other than this. The hash comes with an assortment of vegetables and a meat if you'd like (I like gyro meat) with a good amount of feta. The combination of ingredients make for a really good hash.
I think it's cool that my mom and dad used to hangout here when they were younger. Every time I'm there I think, "how cool is this?" This place has been around for a minute or two. Good for them! I hope they are still around for my children too (if I have some). If you're looking for it, you can't miss it. It's the tin can mobile home. Fleetwood's Website

Yup. It’s a diner. Kinda like a National Coney Island, but so much more. My folks talked about Charlie’s for quite a while before I finally agreed to tag along one morning. I pictured it as the same old boring breakfast, Greek salads and pita sandwiches. Well, was I in for a very pleasant and delicious surprise. There are more reasons to go to Charlie’s than the fact that it’s two blocks away from my ma and pa’s house. It’s also delicious and unique in its genre, with large portions and fresh ingredients. With nice wait staff and owners to boot. So here’s the dish: We got a grilled chicken pita, Reuben sandwich, and Garden Crepes. Sandwiches = GIGANTIC! Tender meat, buttery grilled bread and fresh condiments. All this without being too greasy. And then there’s the garden crepe. A unique dish, consisting of scrambled eggs, tomatoes, asparagus and cheese wrapped in a crepe with hollandaise sauce poured on top. As this was my order, I was more than pleased- and so was my sister, who asked for one bite that turned into ten bites. (I was inwardly annoyed because I wanted to take it home to extend my joy to the next morning for leftovers). Moral of the story: Don’t judge a strip mall diner by it’s cover. You’ll feel the warmth when you step in and be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I’ve been back since, and when I don’t get the crepes the lamb gyro is pretty great too.
I seriously just love this place. Their premise for using all things Detroit is very hip as well as their trendy diner decor. The first thing I liked about them is that directly on their menu it said something like substitutions and additions encouraged. That was nice to read because I always LOVE making additions. I don't see it on the menus anymore, but I still do it anyway. :) I have said this before and I'll say it again, I have never had one bad meal here. They serve lunch and breakfast and close at 3pm. Their burgers are good, their sandwiches are good and their breakfast options are good. I mean really... I just can't say anything bad about Mae's food. My favorites are the club (regular and California) and the W (skill it with sausage, bacon, onions, mushrooms, peppers, cheddar - sub for feta, with two eggs anyway you want them). You get really good portions too. I always eat half there and eat half later or save it for another meal, breakfast or lunch the next day. Their bacon is thick, juicy, and delicious. Just how bacon should be. Their bennies are amazing and if you love english muffins you should pay a little extra and get one. They are thick and come right from Avalon Bakery in Detroit. In fact, all of their breads do! How cool is that. You won't find any Lays chips or Coke here. This place is only donned with Faygo and Better Made products. I am happy that they are becoming more popular. When I went frequently, not many people knew of their existence. They really are a small diner in an awkward location. If you blink you could miss them. Now that they are so popular, the wait time is a bit too long. Since the restaurant is so small there isn't a lot of seating options. Though sometimes I don't mind waiting other times I just want to sit down and order and not wait 30-60 minutes for a chair. I'm hoping they can expand soon. If they do, they will see me more. If you don't get up early or come on relatively off peak times... you should probably go somewhere else. You have to plan your trip here. But if you don't mind waiting then again, the food will not disappoint you. Mae's Website Leo's Coney Island is a favorite. It doesn't pretend to be anything fancy. It doesn't promise you wonderful delicacies that will tickle your palette and dazzle you. It is cheap good food. That's why I like them. They are consistently good and consistently cheap. Obviously their breakfast is a winner. On weekends if you go they will be packed with the locals getting a quick breakfast. I like their salads, wraps, and of course their chicken wings. Their salads seem to always be larger than my head. Their wraps are basically their salads in a pita bread. So, if you like the salads, you'll love the wraps too. The chicken wings are just fried deliciousness. I mean... how can you not like Leo's Coney Island. Yes. Some are more clean and efficient than others. The one by me is brand spankin' new. So, they are clean and fast still.
It helps that they are in walking distance from where I live. It's a nice stroll on a weekend morning to go get breakfast or brunch. Leo's will be seeing me again. Maybe this weekend. :) On any given "breakfast time" day you will see this place swarming with fun and friendly breakfast lovers. One of the best breakfast places in the Mad Heights, The Breakfast Club, offers a wide variety of gourmet B'fast options. Even though there are tons of new breakfast and brunch restaurants popping up all over the Metro-Detroit area this one has been around for quite a bit of time. Opening their first restaurant in Clawson, MI with just 8 tables, they moved to Madison Heights and then opened another in Commerce. They continue to offer quality food to it's clientele. When you walk into the B'fast Club you never feel like just a 'client'. Like walking into grandma's house, you get a warm nostalgic feeling and a welcoming smile. If they weren't complete strangers I would almost give them a hug, it feels so friendly. The first time I came to the B'fast Club it was very busy. So busy in fact my friend and I had to sit at the community round table. We sat with two other groups. This is the charm of this place, that you get to 'rub elbows' with anyone that walks through the door. It was an interesting experience to see what people ordered, listen to people's stories, and watch the dynamics between everyone all while sharing a meal together with strangers. Pretty cool. |
Giving you a taste of what I taste. From gourmet to everyday. No pretentious bull - just good food.
