A little bit of Greece in the mitten. Royal Oak is not widely known for excellent ethnic food, but there are a few restaurants that are creeping in under the radar. Kouzinas is a fast food kind of Greek street food restaurant that hits the mark in many ways. First and foremost, fluffy and delicious gluten-free pita (you can also get regular and whole grain). This is a deal... a big deal. I don't know any other ethnic food joint that does freshly baked gluten-free breads/pitas right on the spot. However, if you know of one, hit me up! If you've been to Greece or Europe you will have stumbled upon the many different kinds of kebab/kebap/or other spellings of the sandwich. This is Europe's equivalent to McDonald's. It's a personal obesession of mine. Once upon a time I ate a kebap sandwich in a train station in Vienna and I fell in love. I've been looking for that same love at first sight feeling and alas have not found it. The options for street food sandwiches are as follows: chicken shwarma, lamb, and pork. If you opt for the Kouzina's special pita sandwich you can get all three up in "yo mouf". For the more health conscious you can get rice/brown rice/salad bowls. If you are lovin' on special sauces, they do offer a spicy feta sauce in addition to their regular tzatziki.
The fries (have to mention them) can be regular seasoned or feta fries. Get them with a dipping sauce and try something new! Spinach pies, baklava, and lemon rice soup are in the mix. They deliver and cater, but more importantly it's a quick and cheap delicious option. Service is fast, friendly, and efficient. On the surface it seems a lot like the local chain Kalamata, but a few things set it above the bar. First and foremost is, 'gotta keep it local'. It may be local, but the price point is just as good. Also, it can't be stated enough... they have freshly made gluten-free pita... It doesn't get any bet than that! I bet you won't even notice the difference. Keep it local and stop in for a bite!
