You know that moment when you’re starving, meeting friends in Ferndale in an hour, and not wanting to search for a parking spot before filling your belly? You know you need to eat before getting your drink on, but can’t deal with circling for spots downtown. This is the moment you go to Christine’s in Ferndale. That scenario might sound like it’s selling Christine’s short. It’s a perfectly comforting and delicious breakfast spot in it’s own right, as well. But its location makes it a great place to grab fresh and well-prepared food in Ferndale in the evening without dealing with Ferndale parking, which is getting increasingly hard to navigate. Christine’s is known in the area for their perogies, which are quite delicious- mashed potato stuffed noodles in butter with sour cream and onions. How could THAT be bad?? They occasionally have coupons online, of the Groupon and Living Social variety- so check it out and try it for cheap. It’s not over the top in terms of price, but it is just a tad more than I think it should be, though for the buck the portion sizes are always huge and provide leftovers later. Here’s a rundown of some highlights:
Breakfast: I haven’t been here many times for breakfast, but the omelets are HUGE and fresh and I have felt a little envious of the unique breakfast platters surrounding me. I think brunch is a highlight of this place, and their menu looks great. Lunch/ dinner: Salads are a highlight. Huge, fresh and full of veggies, cheese and flavor- just the way I like them. I enjoy their lemon vinaigrette, which is their house dressing. It’s a mild lemony flavor that enhances the salad without overpowering, much higher quality than your Coney Island Greek salad with a good variety of choices. What’s a perfect add-on to a salad? Well, soup of course. I haven’t found a soup I didn’t like at Christine’s- they are all homemade and flavorful. My favorite choice is the lentil soup, though the chicken noodle was tasty too. I’ve tasted some of their comfort food entrees as well, so here’s a quick rundown: Bomb burrito with shrimp (tastes like you’d imagine, but it’s HUGE and filling!), Tuscan chicken (a special worth ordering) and cheeseburger (not the best I’ve had, but satisfying and much better than your average diner). This being said, you’ll be pleased with the homemade quality of Christine’s, though not adding it to your must-go foodie destinations. I always find myself back there eventually, and that actually says a lot. Christine's Website
