Good, solid, pricy food. Not surprising for Traverse City which has no shortage of options. I went one time, and it was pretty good. One phenomenal appetizer (their signature pita bread crisps and dips) and a lamb entrée. I remember leaving satisfied but a bit put off by the hole in my wallet. And then it just so happened that we found places we loved for less money, the end result being that we didn’t go back. It could very well be that I didn’t give it enough of a chance, and I’d be happy to check it out again. If I did, I think I’d focus on the appetizers because TONS of them looked appealing. Since the locals always mention this place, I’d check it out if I were you.

There is always a diamond in the rough. A local gem, Ham-Bonz is economical and delicious. You can miss it since it's situated in front of a convenient store. I again read some reviews online and thought, "yep, this is my kind of place."
The first time I went I had the split pea soup and ham sandwich. I just love split pea soup. This one had huge chunks of ham in every bite. The only thing I would have liked would have been more pickles and a homemade honey mustard or a Sweet Lorraine's honey mustard type of mustard. Thick and honey-filled! I thoroughly enjoyed it anyway. Next up, breakfast. They had specials on the board and the potato hash, ham and eggs were the way to go. It was huge and just what I needed. Then I had pulled pork sandwich. They boast about their BBQ, but I have had really good BBQ, especially pork, so I'm kind of picky. I don't think I'll order the pork again, BUT I absolutely will get breakfast and the ham sandwich. Come on in! It's really casual. Just an up north Michigan local restaurant. Ham-Bonz Website Ok, I stopped off at Frenchies after reading reviews for the place. It's small. When I say small... I mean small. That's ok, but if you plan on going you should know that you will be waiting. We waited and there was hardly anyone in the place... but it was full. Think about that for a moment. :)
I had the pastrami sandwich, which was really delicious. I would have liked to of had pickles - lots of pickles. The mustard was just as a honey mustard should be. It was extra honey...E? The service was a little slow, but I didn't mind lingering around for a bit since I had no place to go. If you're in a hurry then I wouldn't plan on stopping in because you will probably be late going to wherever you planned on going. It's a cute little place though. I'm a fan of supporting local. I want to go back and try out some more sandwiches. Frenchies Website The Cherry Hut is a store/restaurant. It's an interesting place with a long history dating back to 1922. I have only been here once on a road pit stop to somewhere else I cant' remember. I remember thinking the food was tasty, but not fantastic. It's really the cute ambience and supporting the local business people. I will tell you that the food was fresh. It may have been simple American food, but it was fresh and tasty. After lunch take a look at some cherry products. If you didn't know, Traverse City is all about cherries. Get your jams, dried cherries, t-shirts, souvenirs, etc. Check them out on their website! Cherry Hut's Website Hands down one of my favorite Asian-Mexican restaurants. Not only is everything fresh, but the flavors the chef gets are simply amazing. What's cool about this place is that it's an Asian - Latin Taqueria. Say whaaaat? Yes, that's right, they serve Latin and Asian food. This restaurant is a coming together or two cultures. It's a pretty neat idea and one that's working.
"My father is Cuban and my mother half Chinese and half Nicaraguan. At the age of seven I was adopted by my American father and was raised in Tampa, Florida. Georgina’s is named after my cousin Georgina Alvarez, the person who saved my life when I was young, who gave me hope, who believed in me and prayed for me. This is my thanks." That's a pretty cool reason to start up a sweet restaurant. Just so you know...the restaurant is really small. So plan on coming during an off peak time. When you walk in you will be greeted by the chef. There are so many things that sound good on the menu. If you have a hard time making a decision ask for recommendations. They are more than happy to assist you. If you have not been yet then make a plan to go. I can't fully capture in words just how good this place was. Georgina's Website |
