B Spot Burger I don't know why you are getting such mixed reviews on Yelp. I'm not sure what the other Yelpers are looking for, but I was just looking for a better than average burger - and that's what I got. I'm already a fan of Michael Symon and his Roast burger so I figured... these have gotta be good.

It's Pinball Pete's meets Dominicks. Minus the sangria, but it's be cool if they started making it! :) With so many new places popping up it was about time new business entrepreneurs started to take note and do something a little different. In steps M Brew a new local beer, snacks, and arcade place. With microbrews on the menu and shuffleboard and old school arcade games downstairs how can this be a bad combination? Answer. It can't. There are snacks for the drunk and hungry ranging from wraps and salads to pizzas and pizza by the slice. There's indoor seats as well as outdoors. If you're by Valentine Vodka and you see the house next door hoppin' with locals, don't be sad you weren't invited to the house party because... You were! Everyone is! That old house is M Brew transformed. So now if VV is too busy you have another place to rest your feet. Good job Ferndale. Once again, you are proving to add new awesome places to your city. Maybe Royal Oak should start taking note. Go try it out! Hot and new. ;) You know that moment when you’re starving, meeting friends in Ferndale in an hour, and not wanting to search for a parking spot before filling your belly? You know you need to eat before getting your drink on, but can’t deal with circling for spots downtown. This is the moment you go to Christine’s in Ferndale. That scenario might sound like it’s selling Christine’s short. It’s a perfectly comforting and delicious breakfast spot in it’s own right, as well. But its location makes it a great place to grab fresh and well-prepared food in Ferndale in the evening without dealing with Ferndale parking, which is getting increasingly hard to navigate.
Hippies love Mudgies and so do I!!! Are you vegetarian, gluten free, or a meat craving carnivore? Do you love salads, Michigan booze and homemade soups? In the mood for a greasy, perfect Rueben or on a health kick? Do you love a good deli or are you looking for a spot that could easily do well in Berkley, California? Mudgies is for all of you. Located in a non-descript location in Detroit (not many other businesses around, so you have to know about it ahead of time), it’s always hoppin’ with a good scene for people watching. And you know you’re gonna get good food. You’ll see words like “Michigan, Detroit, local, farm” all over the menu, which is ALWAYS a good sign. Their soups ALWAYS sound good and rotate daily, and their salads (such as the Fajita chicken salad) are packed full of flavor and unique ingredients. There are a couple of famous sandwiches you can’t go wrong ordering. First off, the Mudgie: Grass-fed beef and turkey with cream cheese and veggies on warm onion Kaiser. And the Gutty V. 2.0: Salami, pastrami, bacon, beef, corned beef, cheddar and veggies on a warm Kaiser. If that didn’t hook you, you’re probably a vegetarian- but don’t worry, they have every kind of roasted red pepper, sprout, mushroom or hummus option for you also (and me, when the occasion calls for it). Sometimes I drive the D just to go to this place, and sometimes I pair it with a skate around Campus Martius on a snow day. But either way, Mudgies fills me with a little bit of awe every time. And it makes up for the fact that I don’t live in California or Ann Arbor when I’m wishing that I did. Enjoy!
Mudgie's Website I was excited when this place opened. I thought, "good! Bastones is finally utilizing their space and are opening an awesome microbrew place!" So, I scheduled a time after work one day to go check it out on their happy hour down time. I honestly was first caught by their clean website and nicely done logo (graphics nerd alert), but disliked that they still have their cafehabana.com domain. Come on guys, go buy the domain and then redirect. Ok. non-food rant over.
They have a wide variety of belgian beers to choose from, which I can't have since they aren't gluten-free, but beer lovers will enjoy new beers that aren't at the other local watering holes. From the descriptions of their food one would think this is a goto place every week. Mussels, burgers, mac and cheeses, waffle sandwiches!@#@(! With descriptions like, "Pork belly, house made tasso ham, bacon pancetta, spiced bbq sauce..." who has time to think about going anywhere else. This obviously is the right choice to go to... THEN you go there. You order. You taste and you feel a little sadness in your heart. The wonderful descriptions that made your mouth water suddenly left you with deep deep food regrets. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say maybe they were off that day (They only had two customers - me being one of them). Maybe they were still fixing the kinks and they weren't quite ready for customers. I mean Rock City Eatery was kind of like that. But I knew that Rock City Eatery was going to be great if they fixed their sh*t. But I'm not so sure about Beer Monk. I think that they will always be an OK place. The ahi tuna burger was overcooked (super dry) and the flavors didn't quite mesh well together. The hummus and kimchi didn't really work. Maybe try something pickled and keep the siracha mayo? Then there were the sliders. You can pick any three from the main burgers and have a mini version of them (Char-grilled elk, maytag bleu cheese and pancetta with French fried onions, hand-pattied Belgian Blue beef, barbecued pork belly, cheddar, apple slaw and Hand-pattied Belgian Blue beef with housemade bacon, edam). The best one of the burgers was the regular belgian blue beef with bacon. All the other burgers were overcooked and again their flavors didn't mesh well. I think the items were made to go together, but something went wrong in the execution. The pork should be tender and moist. It doesn't really need the cheddar hiding the BBQ and the apple slaw. That is, if it's good. The grilled elk was really dry so I can't make an accurate assessment of what it would taste like because I stopped eating it. The fries were fine. They come from bastones and they are made on the regular. It's really hard to mess up fries unless they are drenched in grease, ridiculously over salted and cold. So that went well. I haven't been back to BMA. Maybe I will someday, but it's not looking good in the near future. Beer Monk's Website |
